The miner's inch was derived from the amount of water that would flow through a hole of a given area and a given pressure. The word 'inch' actually refers to the area of the hole in 'square inches'. This amounts to 11.22 gallons a minute or 16,157 gallons a day. |
How To Obtain Water
The cost to purchase an entitlement of one miners inch is $12,000, plus connection costs. You may pay in full or make a down payment and finance the balance with MOMIC over three to five years. You may, however, immediately purchase water as soon as the agreement is made and water season is concurrent. Once the entitlement purchase is complete, the property entitlement travels with the parcel in perpetuity. (In other words, if you choose to sell it at some time in the future, the entitled access to irrigation water would be a significant asset to your property value.) The seasonal cost for one inch of water is $1790.00 ($895 for a half inch). That cost includes the cost of water purchased from NID, diesel fuel, and seasonal equipment maintenance. Water arrives under pressure, which means you do not need to install any pumping equipment to distribute it on your parcel. Members who do not purchase water in any given season do not pay those fees but must still pay the Annual Member Fee which is needed to keep the system viable and protect your investment. Members may purchase up to four inches of entitlement, if they choose to do so. If a parcel owner wants a larger entitlement, they must make a request to the Board for an exemption to that limitation. Thus far, all such requests have been granted. Entitlement guarantees the Member first option to purchase that quantity of water each season. Note that we are limited by the amount of water allowed MOMIC by the Nevada Irrigation District, which to date, has not been an issue. The minimum entitlement is for 1 inch. The amount of entitlement does not necessarily determine the amount of water a Member may purchase. For example, a Member entitled to two inches may purchase three inches each season. As long as we have capacity available, that will be possible. Alternatively, a property that is entitled to three inches, may purchase 2 or 1 or even as little as 1/2 inch in a season. The great majority of Members have a one inch entitlement. Be sure to read and understand the MOMIC Bylaws and contact us for any questions. |
