Due to the vast destruction of Big Oak Valley in the 49er fire of 1988, residents sought to increase the safety of the Valley, thus Melody Oaks Mutual Irrigation Company, Inc. was created. The members of MOMIC are providing much needed water for multiple uses.
Fire Protection: Big Oak Valley is considered as being in Extreme Fire Danger by Cal Fire and Penn Valley Fire. MOMIC maintains 145,000 gallons of water at the ready for fire department use and 41 fire hydrants throughout the valley benefiting ALL BIG OAK VALLEY RESIDENTS. Fire trucks carry no more than 500 gallons of water and without MOMIC, many homes would burn. Well Reliability: MOMIC provides about 70,000,000 to 100,000,000 gallons of water to the Valley. This helps keep the water table up for wells as MOMIC Members do not use their well for irrigation. Wells could otherwise run dry during the summer months. Irrigation: MOMIC water helps keep residents from using well water for irrigation-resulting in more reliable wells and green zones for fire safety. Electrical Cost: PG&E has placed surcharges of as much as $200 or more per month on people who have used their wells extensively for irrigation. Green Space: Green space provided by MOMIC water makes the Valley look more attractive, resulting in higher property values and provides much needed fire protection. Residents of Big Oak Valley are ALL protected by the Fire System maintained by MOMIC. EVERYONE should do their part to support a system which protects all of us. The September McDaniel fire was stopped in a great part due to the use of MOMIC water. Cal Fire and Penn Valley Fire Departments both said that a huge destructive fire would have occurred if the MOMIC Fire Hydrants were not available. Please be fair and protect the Valley by donating to the MOMIC Fire Fund and maintaining a green zone around your property. Water Conservation and Expensive Diesel Fuel
The cost of water is not our only expense. The water must be pumped from the NID canal to our storage tank.. The more water we use, the more diesel is used and our costs go up. As it is, we may have to make an additional payment for the increased cost, so use the water for irrigation and fire suppression, but don't let it run to waste.
